By Eddington Pindura | Mental Health Awareness Week
Mental health is not a side issue. It’s not something that affects “some people.” It’s all of us.
It’s in our bodies, because stress and trauma don’t stay in the mind.
It’s in our wallets, because financial pressure fuels anxiety.
It’s in our homes, our marriages, our friendships—even in how we show up at work or in our faith.
It’s in the big, defining moments… and in the quiet ones we never tell anyone about.
Yet, in 2025, we are facing an uncomfortable truth: public attitudes around mental health are starting to slide backwards.
The stigma is creeping back in. Funding is falling short. And the cracks in the system are widening—leaving those most in need to fall through.
The System Is Broken—And People Are Paying the Price
We’ve heard the promises before. Commitments to “parity of esteem” between mental and physical health. Ambitious strategies and glossy campaigns. But the reality for too many is long waiting lists, inadequate support, and systems that are stretched to the brink.
When you’re in crisis, weeks—or even months—of waiting is not just frustrating. It’s dangerous.
The hardest hit?
Those already facing barriers: people in poverty, ethnic minorities, those with long-term health conditions, carers, and young people navigating a post-pandemic world of uncertainty.
We cannot keep treating mental health as optional or “nice to have.” It is foundational. Just as we fight for better housing, better pay, and safer streets, we must fight for better mental health support—for everyone.
Why I’m Standing With Mind
Mind has long been a voice for the voiceless. From lobbying government to providing life-saving frontline services, they are there when it counts. And this Mental Health Awareness Week, their message is clear:
“Mental health is part of everyone’s life. It’s time our decision-makers acted like it.”
That’s a call I stand behind—and I’m inviting you to do the same.
What You Can Do Today
Let’s not let this week pass like a social media trend. Let’s take real steps:
✅ Speak up. Share your own story if you feel able. Silence keeps stigma alive.
✅ Support Mind. Donate, fundraise, or amplify their work on your platforms.
✅ Challenge leaders. Write to your MP. Demand investment in mental health services.
✅ Check in. Ask a friend, “How are you—really?” And listen.
✅ Take care of yourself. You’re not being dramatic. You’re being human.
Final Thought
Mental health isn’t a “special interest.” It’s a human right.
It’s not separate from education, poverty, or justice—it’s interwoven.
It’s not just about services—it’s about society.
And we get to shape that society.
Let’s shape it with empathy.
Let’s shape it with courage.
Let’s shape it like lives depend on it—because they do.
